OUR HISTORY
Hope After Rape Conception was originally birthed by a group of women who were themselves affected by rape conception, including two mothers from rape and a woman who was conceived in rape. After finding themselves locked in custody battles with their rapists, the two mothers decided they wanted to help other women in the same situation, and thus, HARC was initially formed.
The original group worked to develop the legal language to protect mothers from rape and their children that was eventually incorporated into the Rape Survivor Child Custody Act, a bipartisan bill that passed at the federal level. This federal legislation incentivizes states to pass the same language.
These moms found themselves busy and weren't able to invest all the time they originally hoped to invest in HARC, and it became defunct. It stayed this way for many years until our Executive Director, who was conceived in rape and is also a mother from rape, took over the remains of what had once been and, with the blessing of the originators, began the process of incorporating HARC as a non-profit in 2020.
The trails blazed by the original creators of Hope After Rape Conception have laid a framework for the roads we will pave going forward. We are continuing their work and building upon it, in order to make our society a more hopeful place for mothers from rape and their children.
